Paul Tristram- Three Poems

The Wino’s Last Stand

Was not a glorious and heroic battleground!
No, it was a dissolving and gradual wasting away
from a hospital ward departure lounge
with bottle-less hands clawing their neurotic way
frantically, pathetically and deformed by cringing
through the shame, pain, shit and piss that remained,
staining the bed sheets just as he had stained his life.

Trench Foot Mouth

We were replacing the kitchen worktops
in the Neath ‘Royal British Legion’
and upon completion of this task
we collected our pay from behind the bar,
along with a tab for 3 free drinks each.
We ordered a couple of pints of ‘Welsh Bitter’
and sat down next to a blind, old gentleman,
drinking gins and soda waters at the nearest table.
We started talking about the Six Nations Rugby
but he soon interrupted us with an inquisitive
“Do you have girls at home, me boys?”
“No, we’re both in between enemies, at present!”
I informed him with a light hearted chuckle.
“Aye, the enemy indeed!” he sighed loudly.
“Keep in between them, is my advice, Boys Bach,
keep vigilant and on your toes now, have a lend see
every once and a while but let those doe-eyed
tadpoles free again before they turn into sharks.
Never marry, I was in the last big war and seen it all
but never have I witnessed a man ripped apart as much
as standing in his own living room and marriage vows.
My own was a ‘Sweetheart’ when I met her,
shy, sensitive, thoughtful and caring by nature,
she was a ‘Hella’ by the end, ‘Trench Foot Mouth’
I call her, I’ve never heard so much bloody filth
come pouring out of one persons gob in all my life.
I divorced her 5 year ago, I had too she was killing me
and I’ve had to renew the restraining order twice, since.
Aye, them ‘Vows’ be the Devil’s work, I swear,
they end up castrating good, proud, strong men
and turning angels into screaming, vindictive psychos!”

The Only Thing Stopping You Holding Me Back…Was Me!

I have sailed these seas for decades now,
crashing through mishap and adventure.
The only one thing sure in this life
is running out of ‘time’ at some point.
Before that little clause in the contract
that no one had the decency to ask us to sign
absolutely anything will and does GO.
Learn the quick way or the hard way
but learn you will, there is no escaping
the lessons that are waiting for you out there.
There is only one side to a story…yours!
There is more than just front and back,
black and white to any situation or person.
Disengage from all vindictive people
and they implode and poison themselves.
There are energy vampires, I’ve actually
watched them turn young again in a matter
of months, cast them off and they shrivel
back just as quickly (Like water to a witch!)
Envious people should be banned completely
from your life and don’t be foolish enough
to think that anyone jilted by you, no matter
how amicably, wants to be your friend now,
they’re just watching and waiting for your fall.
Keeping your smooth path through life, peaceful
and contented is like weeding a garden, anything
or anyone that doesn’t make you happy or smile
should be ripped out by the roots and discarded.
